Bethesda launched their first E3 presentation and stunned the gaming world by delivering some of the most anticipated news from deep within the Bethesda vault. Doom and Fallout 4 were some of the more anticipated titles that fans were eager to see and learn about the intricate details and boy was it worth the wait! Let’s take a nose dive in to some of those highlights and pick out some of the Juicy details from Doom, Fallout 4, Dishonored 2 and more.
DOOM
Marti Stratton, Executive Producer of Id Software introduced the brand new slice of Doom gameplay. The gameplay started with the marine placing his helmet upon his head, followed that iconic pump of his shotgun. The gameplay looked very smooth and seemed to introduce new features like the double jump, a feature that is being used more and more in next gen games. Thumbs up so far.
The gore factor was off the scale of anything I’ve seen in a Doom game in that I felt reminded of the Mortal Kombat Fatality moves. I was worried that the Doom gameplay would appear disjointed and far from the claustrophobic feel of the original game but I was wrong. Doom looked, felt and sounded great. The groans and grunts of imps, the steely grinds of loading weapons, down to the air shooting out of airlocks; all sounded like the Doom we know. I wasn’t a fan of Doom 3 due because the originality seemed to evaporate in unfamiliar environments and grey colour pallets. Fortunately, I feel we are now back on track with the franchise. The original Doom games on the PC and arguably the 16bit ports carried Doom 3 as they were bundled in with the BFG edition on the PS3 and Xbox 360. That’s the only reason I purchased a copy.
Guns! Doom has always been about guns. Marti Stratton said that Doom’s core originates around “badass demons, big effin guns and moving fast”. I completely agree. I made a note of the guns I spotted in the E3 Doom demo: Shotgun Super Shotgun Plasma Rifle Heavy Assault rifle Rocket Launcher BFG Chainsaw Doom Snapmap is a new feature introduced by Id Software whereby players can build multiplayer maps and share them with friends worldwide. This feature seems incredible. The building mechanics in Doom Snapmap looked simple to navigate around too. I always fear that build mode features will be overly complex but not this. Here’s to hoping I am not wrong. Doom will be released on the PS4, Xbox One and PC in Spring 2016.
Dishonored 2
For fans of the 2012 hit, Dishonored you’ll be pleased to know that Arkane Studios have a sequel in the pipleline. Dishonored 2 is due for release in Spring 2016. Not much was said about the game but the gameplay did look impressive. If you can’t wait for this then you might want to get your hands on Dishonored Definitive Edition, which includes an additional four missions, bundled in as DLC. Dishonored Definitive Edition will be released on PS4 and Xbox One.
Fallout 4
Todd Howard, Director of Bethesda Game Studios, packed an astonishing punch at delivering the news ofFallout 4. The cheers in the crowd were the loudest of the entire delivery, which came as no surprise. Fallout 4 has been in development since 2009 right after Fallout 3 had been released. It was confirmed that Fallout 4 is set in Boston but that’s no surprise right? The game starts before the nuclear bombs are dropped and we can tailor our character appearance and traits. This is done with fluidity as our character (yes, we can play as male or female) peers in to the bathroom mirror. The rest is history. What we know is that we make it to Vault 111 but based on the gameplay shown, our partner and child doesn’t appear to make it. During the scene where the bombs drop and annihilate citizens at the vault door, look for a person holding a baby. That is our partner and child (I’m speculating according to what I saw at E3).
It’s not until 200 years later when we surface as the only survivor of Vault 111 from which we can choose to roam the Wasteland in first or third person mode. The Fallout 4 gameplay demo then shows a place called Sanctuary Hills, which I believe, was our neighbourhood. Pretty cool. The HUD is green as it was in Fallout 3 and as of yet, I’m unsure if the colour can be changed as it could in Fallout New Vegas.
The Fallout 4 interactive trailer showed our canine friend wandering through the wasteland. We now know that we can give commands to him/her within the game. The extent of the commands remains to be seen in Fallout 4 but conceptually I believe this is going to be a pivotal feature. The Pipboy is found as soon as we leave vault 111 and is now more interactive than ever, even down to being able to play retro games. Yes, we can tap in to replicas of Asteroids and Donkey Kong after cycling through our stat menus. VATS is also back in Fallout 4, which, again, is no surprise. There was one feature of Fallout 4 that didn’t really impress me and that is build mode. Bethesda incorporated this in to Fallout 4 to amplify the immersive feel. Large build sites were deliberately scattered across the plains of Boston to allow players to choose when to build. Personally, I won’t be using this feature much. Fallout 4 is not The Sims after all. What do you think to this feature? Fallout 4 will be available to buy on November 10th 2015 and playable on the PS4, Xbox One and PC. I’ll be getting the Pipboy edition as it comes with a real Pipboy that will be compatible with my phone and an app. The Pipboy will act as a second screen in the game. Full features are not fully revealed but as it stands the players can still use the app without the actual Pipboy device. If you can't wait for Fallout 4 then head over to then IOS App Store to download Fallout Shelter. You play as the overseer after building your own vault. Manage civilians and defend against raiders and rad roaches and continue to build. Fallout Shelter is a free game that can be played offline. Go grab it now. What do you guys think about this news? Doom and Fallout 4 are looking excellent! You can now watch the full Bethesda E3 presentation below.
