Mortal Kombat 16-bit review
Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II are my favourite of the MK series
Mortal Kombat is one of the most prominent fighters of my generation and with the launch of Mortal Kombat X hitting next generation consoles, I found it quite fitting to pen my thoughts on the original titles. I had a Super Nintendo as a kid (ahem yes I preferred the Snes over the rival Mega Drive) so most of my kick ass memories.

Mortal Kombat II It's all over for Sub Zero
My fondest memory of the whole Mortal Kombat experience is writing down all of the finishing moves on rough paper. Back in the 90s we did it all on paper! Coca Cola stained, crumpled ass paper! Whether it was a Fatality, Babality or friendship all of the moves were on that shitty paper. As soon as the red text flashed up on the screen "Finish Him" we'd take a quick glance down at the paper to make sure we could tap the sequence on to the Snes controller. I still love it as much today as I did in the early nineties. I'd love to hear your memories of playing Mortal Kombat.

My favourite character is Scorpion despite having another six to chose from in Mortal Kombat and a further eleven in Mortal Kombat II. The classic phrase: "get over here" seems to have become as much of a part of Mortal Kombat as the blood and gore itself. It was the only move I knew off by heart which is pretty embarrassing to admit. Nonetheless, a deadly move once executed. But what would any of these moves be without the unique arenas? There are ten arenas in Mortal Kombat II all with a very different vibe. The Deadpool is once that sticks in my mind most prominently. I just love the foreground with the chain hanging against the deadly acidic pool of... erm...acid. Other arenas include The Pit II, The Living Forest and The Portal.

Mortal Kombat II The Deadpool Arena
I was never interested in the storyline behind Mortal Kombat or Mortal Kombat II. I watched a review of Mortal Kombat X and it appears to be one of the more story driven Mortal Kombat titles. The reviewer added that the cut scenes to the story are a nice touch but fans just want to fight so the story is not as important. That's exactly how I feel about Mortal Kombat. The story could involve the Walmart CEO for all I care. So long as I can still crack some bones and tear some flesh in the arena, I'm good.

Maybe in the future we can talk about Street Fighter Vs Mortal Kombat - another prominent debate of the 90s. For now it would be awesome if you could subscribe to my Youtube channel. We have a solid community on Facebook that is totally devoted to all gen gaming and overall geeky culture. Want games? Check out these kick ass shops. Don't forget to share your memories in the comments.
