Alien Trilogy PS1 review
Alien Trilogy - Playstation 1, Sega Saturn & MS-DOS
The Aliens franchise experienced its fair share of ups and downs. To this day I'll never understand why Alien Resurrection made it beyond the first draft. Winona Ryder in Aliens? Really? That was my great debate of 1997. Leaping out of our cryo tube in to the present day rumours of an Aliens sequel continue to ripple across our geek and sci-fi grapevine. Are you excited? I most definitely am especially as Sigourney Weaver may reprise her role as the Ultimate Badass Ellen Ripley. Now, let's take a look back at one Aliens game that I used to loathe but now I adore, Alien Trilogy.

Alien Trilogy - Kaboom. In your face with the shotgun
Alien Trilogy is a classic First Person Shooter that sees Ripley take on face huggers and the familiar yet scary Xenomorphs. Scary in the film perhaps but not so much in Alien Trilogy. Probe Entertainment were the developers behind Alien Trilogy and I feel that they didn't capture the true and frightening nature of the Aliens movie. Fear, desperation, loss and anguish. It's all missing from Alien Trilogy. Despite this, I featured Alien Trilogy in my Top Ten Playstation 1 titles of all time. I believe this is out of pure nostalgia rather than it being a great gaming experience.

The story seems pretty basic as Ripley is the only person left on LV426 whom is tasked to kill anything in she encounters and unlock the path to progress. Erm, yeah that's it. Back in 1996 I didn't mind that it lacked story but as my gamer brain shaped in refinement I would have loved to have seen a little more story. The cut scenes are pretty slick, smooth and utilise the 3D technology really well.

Alien Trilogy - Am I seeing double? No there really were two in the gameplay
I used to get incredibly motion sick whilst watching my brother play this game. I believe this to be due to the dark environments in Alien Trilogy combined with a lot of twisting and turning. The two together did nothing for my 13 year old self back in 1996. I find the environments to be too dark and too monotonous in Alien Trilogy. What could have been different? Imagine Alien Isolation on the PS1. That's how I would have liked Alien Trilogy to feel. In Alien Isolation, the environments seem to vary across labs, corridors, sleeping quarters, locker rooms, space stations, kitchens and more. If there was ever a HD remake of Alien Trilogy I'd love to see the shift in environments.

Alien Trilogy is a solid first person shooter despite its obvious flaws. The average ratings in the gaming world were between 7 and 8 out of 10 back in 1996. Personally, I'd fire a 7 out of 10 at Alien Trilogy. Oddly, I adore this game.

As you're obviously a fan of the franchise when it's done well what are your feelings on the news that the new Aliens film will ignore Alien 3 and Resurection so the story will follow on from Aliens? Sigourney Weaver is also on board.

Hey Ken,
Naturally I'm ECSTATIC they're making a sequel to Aliens. What better person to make in for this generation to: Neil Blomkamp (probably an incorrect spelling). I think it's going to great to See Hicks and Ripley reunite. I always wondered what could have been with those two. I'm hoping Newt will be back too.

How do you feel about it?
Cheers
Gemma
